Collaborating for Impact: Student Projects on Pay Transparency at BOS Hungary

At BOS Hungary, we believe that meaningful progress comes from open dialogue, shared expertise, and collaboration across industries and generations. One such example of this approach recently took shape through our partnership with the Apáczai Csere János Faculty at Széchenyi István University.

As part of their Human Resource Management Master’s program, three student teams were tasked with developing project work for BOS Hungary — each centered around the practical implementation of the European Union’s new pay transparency directive.

This directive, aimed at promoting fairness and equality in the workplace, represents a significant regulatory shift for EU-based companies, including those in the automotive sector. Companies have lot on their plates regarding the topic and we aim to be as proactive as we can. One of our initiatives in this direction was to work together with the University. The students gain valuable insight into the automotive industry and we gain external insights that can help shape our own decision making in the future.

A Three-Pronged Challenge

The students were invited to explore this directive from three key perspectives:

  •  Job Architecture – One group proposed a restructuring of our job classification system to better align with transparency requirements.
  •  Reporting Processes – Another team reimagined how we manage and communicate pay data within the organization.
  •  Communication Strategy – The third group developed an internal and external communication plan to support clear, inclusive discourse around pay-related topics.

Structured for Success: How the Project Unfolded

The collaborative effort unfolded in three main phases:

Kickoff: Representatives from our People & Culture department were invited to the university to provide an overview of all three project topics, alongside essential company background. This session gave students the chance to raise professional and operational questions regarding goals, resources, constraints, and affected systems and processes.

Group Work: Once briefed, the students formed their own teams to tackle each challenge. Throughout this stage, there was ongoing communication between BOS and the student groups, ensuring the deliverables met both academic and practical standards.

Plant Visit and Project Presentations: Upon completion of the projects, the teams — accompanied by their professor and the Dean of the Faculty — visited our plant in Mosonszolnok. Each group presented their solutions to our People & Culture Manager and General Manager, leading to an insightful afternoon of professional discussion. The visit concluded with a plant tour led by our Plant Manager, offering the students a closer look at the connections between production operations and HR processes.

Real-World Value from Academic Collaboration

Each team delivered their work with professionalism, critical thinking, and practical insight. Their recommendations were not only well-researched but also contained innovative ideas we see potential in adapting as part of our long-term People & Culture strategy.

We were especially impressed by the students' ability to balance regulatory understanding with organizational realities, as well as their openness to feedback throughout the process.

These projects showed us how valuable external academic partnerships can be — not just for education, but for strategic development.

For our People & Culture department, the work has just begun.Using the outcomes of this collaboration alongside our internal plans and insights, we are now setting out to improve several key processes in the coming year. These efforts aim to ensure that BOS Hungary remains a forward-thinking, transparent, and inclusive workplace for all.

We sincerely thank all participating students and faculty members for their effort, commitment, and collaboration. Working together in this way creates true value for both business and education — and strengthens the future of our shared workforce.

We look forward to continuing this partnership and exploring further opportunities for cooperation.
